On September 30, 2021, Governor Newsom signed California Assembly Bill No. 481 (AB 481) into law. AB 481 is codified in Government Code sections 7070 through 7075 and requires a law enforcement agency (“LEA”) to obtain approval of a “military equipment” use policy via an ordinance prior to the LEA funding, acquiring, or using military equipment.

On December 13, 2022, the Kern County Board of Supervisors adopted Kern County Ordinance G-9185 under AB 481. KCSO will be seeking Board adoption for the renewal of Ordinance G-9185 and Military Equipment Use Policy in order to allow KCSO to continue to use the vital equipment specified therein, as well as acquire new equipment in the future.

Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed ordinance is encouraged to do so in writing before the hearing; however, written or verbal comments may be submitted any time prior to the close of the public hearing. Written correspondence should be sent to the Office of the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, Fifth Floor, Kern County Administrative Center, 1115 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, California, 93301.
