The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Property Room Unit is responsible for the intake, secure storage, management, and authorized release of a broad range of property, evidence, and departmental equipment. Items processed by the Property Room Unit include currency, firearms, narcotics, prisoner property, and numerous other forms of evidence associated with criminal investigations. In addition, the Property Room Unit manages items for safekeeping and found items surrendered to law enforcement. Property Room personnel make all reasonable efforts to identify and return property to its rightful owners in a timely manner. Items deemed contraband, hazardous, illegal to possess, or classified as active evidence will not be released to the public.

The Property Room Unit maintains evidentiary assets on behalf of the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Kern County District Attorney’s Office, Kern County Probation Department, Kern High School District Police Department, and the Bear Valley Police Department. Property Room personnel ensure proper security, documentation, and retrieval for use in judicial proceedings.

The Property Room Unit is staffed by a Sheriff’s Office Sergeant supervising eight Sheriff’s Aides. The Property Room takes in approximately 400-600 items per week and currently holds over 180,000 items of property and evidence.
