Citizen Volunteers

Kern County Sheriff's Office

The Citizen Service Unit is a volunteer group within the Kern County Sheriff's Office. This program brings people into law enforcement from all walks of life and uses their experiences in service to the community. Crime Prevention Citizen Service Unit is a specialized group of volunteers that work together with paid staff to augment the programs and services available through the Crime Prevention Unit.

Members present a variety of programs, including Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Personal safety and Combat Auto Theft. In addition these volunteers represent the Sheriff's Office at a variety of public functions, including fairs and expos and provide prevention information to the community at these events. Members must meet the following criteria for consideration to CSU:

  • 21 years of age
  • Kern County resident
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Successful completion of a background investigation
  • Oral interview

Once an applicant successfully completes the oral interview and background investigation, they are required to complete a basic CSU academy. During the academy they will be introduced to topics including basic criminal law, radio procedures, driver awareness and disaster preparedness. After completion of the academy the applicant then becomes a commissioned CSU member and can participate in all activities. In addition, all members of Crime Prevention CSU will receive intensive specialized training in Crime Prevention programs.
