The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Property Room Unit is responsible for receiving, securing, and releasing a wide variety of property. Items received by the Property Room Unit include, but are not limited to, money, jewelry, firearms, narcotics, bicycles, and evidence related to various types of crimes.
The Property Room safeguards law enforcement evidence for the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, Probation Department, Kern High School District Police, and the Kern County Parks and Recreation Department. The Property Room is required to maintain evidence in the same condition in which it was received to preserve and protect the integrity of the evidence. Property Room Unit personnel are accountable for the appropriate security and retrieval of items of evidence to ensure the proper chain-of-custody is documented for potential court proceedings.
The Property Room Unit also contains the Excess Federal Program (1033), which procures excess military property made available for use by our agency. The cost savings for 1033 saved the sheriff’s office over $800,000 for FY21.
Additionally, the Property Room Unit stores lost-and-found property surrendered to law enforcement. Property Room personnel strive to identify the rightful owner(s) and return their property as quickly as possible. The Property Unit cannot release items considered contraband, hazardous, illegal to possess, or items offered into court as evidence.
The Property Room Unit is comprised of one Sheriff’s Sergeant who supervises six Sheriff’s Aides, and as of 2022, the Property Room Unit currently houses 168,000 items.
